Ruth

This is a great book to read for encouragement. Naomi was Ruth’s mother-in-law and both women were widows barely surviving in Moab. Naomi and Ruth are beautiful examples of loyalty, friendship, and commitment. The story of Ruth and Naomi took place during the times of the Judges when idolatry, violence and disobedience ruled the world. This story shows that even in times of crisis, there are always followers of God and He works through them. This story demonstrates God’s grace in the midst of evil and disaster. Sometimes, we think of blessings only in terms of prosperity rather than high quality relationships God makes possible for us. No matter our economic situation, we can love and respect the people God has brought into our lives. In so doing, we give and receive blessings and Love is the greatest blessing. “But Ruth replied, ‘Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn my back from you. Where you go, I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me’” (Ruth1:16) This verse gives me goose bumps! Can you feel the love, the loyalty, the bravery, the passion and the truth in the conviction of these words? When Lord gives me the blessing of marriage, the desire of my heart is to be filled with these very words for my husband.

We know more of the relationship between Ruth and Naomi than we do of them as individuals. They were bound to each other; they shared deep sorrow, great affection for one another and an overriding commitment to God. As much as they depended on one another, they also gave each other freedom. Naomi helped to arrange Ruth’s marriage to Boaz although it would change their relationship. God was at the center of their relationship. How often do you share your unedited thoughts about God with your spouse or friends? Sharing openly about God can bring depth and intimacy into our relationships with others. Both Ruth and Naomi tried to do what was best for the other person. God’s living presence in our relationships can overcome differences that might otherwise create division and disharmony.
Ruth made her home in a foreign land. Instead of depending on Naomi or waiting for good fortune to happen, she took the initiative. She went to work. When Ruth went out into the fields, God provided for her. If you are waiting for God to provide, consider that He may be waiting for you to make the first move and prove how important your need is! How is your attitude when you have been given a task or job that is not up to your true potential? It may be a test of your character that can open new doors of opportunity.

Ruth had many qualities that I appreciate, understand and aspire to. She was hardworking, loving, kind, faithful and brave. The key to these qualities is that she displayed them consistently. Her character remained the same no matter where she was or who she was with.

When Ruth was gleaning for grain, it just so “happened” to be in Boaz’ field (her future husband). God works in your life in ways you may not even notice. There is no luck or coincidence. We should have faith that God is directing our lives for His purpose. Boaz and Ruth shared a romantic love grounded in unselfishness and deep respect for one another. Boaz demonstrates qualities of a true hero. Heroes do the right thing at the right time and the right way, and think of others before themselves. Boaz was always sensitive to the needs of other people. His words were colored with kindness. He offered his help openly and without ulterior motive. We are often challenged with making the easier choice than the right one. Boaz was a man of his word and had a deep sense of responsibility and integrity.
Because of Ruth’s faithful obedience, her life and legacy were significant although she couldn’t see all the results, for the events in Ruth were part of God’s preparation for the births of David and of Jesus. Live in faithfulness to God, knowing that the significance of your life will extend beyond your lifetime and the rewards will far outweigh any sacrifice you’ve made.
